Rescue write to object to development at West Cepen Way, Chippenham, Wiltshire

Update on 19th September 2016: The Strategic Planning Committee of Wiltshire Council in their meeting on Wednesday the 14th Sep chose to REJECT The Range Proposal for a Distribution Centre and Shop – unanimously.

Rescue have recently written to Wiltshire Council in response to a planning application for a storage and distribution centre in Chippenham (14/11556/FUL), which we had been alerted to by a local correspondent. A pre-determination evaluation had recorded remains of National Significance and had led to part of the development site being Scheduled.

The applicant now proposes full excavation of the monument prior to development, should the relevant consents be granted. Rescue have written to object to such proposals on the basis of the archaeology on site and the wider setting of the newly scheduled monument and other designated assets in close proximity.

RESCUE believes The Range proposal would not meet the legal and planning obligations in relation to the scheduled monument and its setting. No case has been made for overriding public or economic benefit for the scheme to be sited in this location.
